Nara Toukae: A Candlelit Festival You Can’t Miss!|Nara Park in JAPAN

JapanKansaiNara

Hello! This is RabbiTravel from JAPAN!!

If you’ve ever heard the “Nara Toukae” festival and wondered what it’s all about, you’re in the right place.

I recently experienced this enchanting event held every summer in Nara Park, and I’m excited to share my memories—and plenty of photos—with you.

What Is Nara Toukae?

Every August, for just ten days, Nara Park transforms into a magical wonderland. The park is adorned with countless candles, and as dusk falls, dedicated volunteers light them one by one, creating a surreal, soothing glow that’s simply mesmerizing.

The official description from the Nara Toukae website perfectly captures the magic of the event:

Over 1300 years ago, Nara flourished as Japan’s capital, and traces of ancient Japan still linger amidst its vast natural beauty. In a setting that evokes nostalgia and gently soothes the heart, soft candlelight illuminates the park.

Nara Toukae gathers the prayers of people in this World Heritage site, lit up by the glow of countless candles. Since its inception in 1999, the festival has blended with the spirit of the ancient capital, stirring deep emotions in all who visit.

For just ten days each summer, amid Nara’s expansive greenery and storied history, the “flowers” of candlelight bloom. These luminous shapes—formed at the tips of flames—are seen as a symbol of good fortune.

May every visitor find happiness in the light of Nara Toukae.

As you might know, the park is famous for its friendly, free-roaming deer.

Although I expected to see a few, I was amazed by the sheer number of deer congregating around—a true highlight of Nara’s charm.

The Daytime Setup

I arrived a bit early and noticed that countless candles had already been placed throughout the park—even though they were still unlit.

As the afternoon wore on, volunteers began arriving to light them. I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, there are so many volunteers!” Their energy and dedication truly add to the magic of the experience.

Exploring the Festival Stalls

Since the full magic of the festival wasn’t on display just yet, I decided to explore the various food and craft stalls scattered throughout Nara Park.

Nara Toukae at Night

Before I knew it, night had fallen and the candles lit up with captivating beauty. I’m incredibly grateful to all the volunteers who made this possible.
