Hello! This is RabbiTravel from JAPAN!!
Kagoshima, located in the southernmost part of Kyushu, Japan, is a region rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unique culinary delights. Having recently explored this captivating area, I’m excited to share some must-see attractions and must-try experiences that made my visit truly memorable.
Recommended Attractions and Activities in Kagoshima
1. Sakurajima

No trip to Kagoshima is complete without visiting Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Accessible via the Sakurajima Ferry, this iconic landmark offers visitors a firsthand look at nature’s raw power. During my visit, I was fortunate to witness a minor eruption, a humbling reminder of the Earth’s dynamic forces.
2. Sand Bath Experience

A unique relaxation method native to Kagoshima is the sand bath, particularly popular in the Ibusuki area. At facilities like “Sunamushi Kaikan Saraku”, guests are gently buried in naturally heated sand, providing a soothing and rejuvenating experience. The warmth envelops your body, melting away stress and fatigue.
3. Visit to Kirishima Shrine

Nestled amidst lush greenery, Kirishima Shrine is a sacred site with a history dating back centuries. Recently designated as a National Treasure on February 9, 2022, this shrine was also a destination for the famed samurai, Sakamoto Ryoma, during his honeymoon. The serene environment offers a spiritual retreat, allowing visitors to connect with Japan’s rich cultural tapestry.
Culinary Delights to Savor in Kagoshima

‘Shirokuma,’ translating to ‘polar bear,’ is a delightful Kagoshima specialty. This dessert features a mound of shaved ice generously drizzled with sweetened condensed milk and adorned with a variety of fresh fruits. While I enjoyed a delicious serving at Yamakataya, the most renowned establishment for this treat is “Tenmonkan Mujaki”. It’s a perfect way to cool down on a warm day.
2. Somen Nagashi

Unlike the traditional ‘nagashi somen’ where noodles flow through bamboo flumes, Kagoshima offers ‘somen nagashi,’ where noodles circulate in a round basin of cold water. The birthplace of this culinary experience is “Tosenkyo” in Ibusuki City. Pairing this meal with a visit to the nearby sand baths makes for a quintessential Kagoshima day trip.
3. Jambo Mochi

‘Jambo Mochi’ are skewered rice cakes glazed with a sweet soy sauce. The name ‘jambo’ doesn’t refer to size but rather to the two sticks (‘jambo’) used to hold the mochi. This traditional snack offers a delightful blend of chewy texture and savory-sweet flavor, making it a must-try when exploring local delicacies.
